We ♥ Adjectives Project

Brainstorming Adjectives

Picture
First we started our project by reading the book, Hairy, Scary, Ordinary What is an Adjective? by Brian Cleary and If You Were an Adjective by Michael Dahl to get a good idea of what an adjective is.

Then we each made a brainstorm list of every adjective we could think of, wrote them on hearts and decorated the room with these adjective hearts.

Using Images to Inspire More Adjectives

Picture
In small groups, we had a gallery walk where we looked at 4 magazine pictures and wrote down every adjective we could think of in the photos. Then we rotated to another set of pictures to do the same. When all groups went to all stations, we stopped, picked the picture that most inspired us to write an awesome story packed with adjectives. We sat down and wrote those stories.

Look for examples to be posted here soon!

Adjective Poems

Picture
Here's an example of the poems we will write. We take a plain sentence and add adjectives on each line to construct the poem.

On my way to the zoo I saw a bear.
It was a brown bear.
It was an ugly brown bear
It was a wild, ugly, brown bear
It was an angry, wild, ugly, brown bear
It was a hungry, angry, wild, ugly, brown bear
It was an escaped, hungry, angry, wild, ugly, brown bear
And it wanted to eat me!

Add an Adjective

Picture
The idea was to set out one or all of the adjective blocks. Pick out a word like 'house', and have the student find adjectives that describes theirs, such as 'big', 'white', 'new', etc.

Friendship Cinquain Poems

Picture
Since February is International Friendship Month, it’s a perfect time to write friendship poems. Cinquains are simple 5-line poems, and in this activity students, through the creation of a poem, write about a classmate.

Yesterday I had the Blues

Colors can translate feelings and emotions. In this activity, students describe their mood with a color, then use common items to pinpoint their emotions.

Adjective Writing Prompts

Picture
Random magic adjective buttons provide ideas for students to write with adjectives.

Adjective Assessment

Picture
Draw a heart around the adjectives.
I printed a short story for the children to enjoy and then asked them to draw hearts around the adjectives. Drawing the hearts in Red Gel Pen or maybe a pink or red sparkly pen made the activity more fun and not feel so much like a test.
